"The Importance of Being Earnest" (The Importance of Being Earnest), also translated as "Sincerity Matters Most", is a satirical comedy of manners written by Irish playwright Wilde in the 19th century. Inspired by "Engaged", a comedy by William S. Gilbert. The whole play is divided into 3 acts or 4 acts, depending on the version staged. It premiered at St Jamess Theater in London on February 14, 1895.
Set in Victorian England, the shows humor centers on protagonist Jacks fictional younger brother, Ernest. Ernest is a homophony of earnest (earnest), and Jacks last name, Worthing, is the name of the town where Wilde lived when he wrote the play.
