This is the second collection of Phaitoon
Thanyas short stories that I have had the
privilege of translating. The five stories
in the first collection. published in 1997
as The So-So War, are also included this
time. (They are "The Muddy Path."
"Building Sandpiles." "Up On A Cliff," "The
Javanese Son," and "At The Western
Battle Front: The So-So War.") So this is
an expanded collection, and for the most
part the additional stories are ones I have
chosen to give readers a representative
introduction to the works of one of the
key Thai writers of this generation.
