Guide to Color Fondant, Buttercream Icing and Royal Icing with Food Coloring
When you take the right approach to color fondant, buttercream and royal icing with Chefmaster Liqua-Gel color concentrations, your baked creations turn out bright and vibrant for everyone to enjoy. You must apply the gel food coloring properly to achieve the correct tones for all your projects. Use this guide to learn how to best harness the power of liquid gel food coloring to reach your baking and decorating goals.
USING FOOD COLORING FOR FONDANT Although you can spray fondant a different color after sculpting the necessary surfaces, adding color, in the beginning, can create a better final product. You will need to color the fondant you will use all at the same time to prevent tint differences. Therefore, measure out your fondant ahead of time and start kneading it into a softball.
Upon softening the fondant, add a couple drops of your preferred Chefmaster Liqua-Gel food coloring concentration to the surface and continue kneading. If you are making a creation with bold, deep colors, do not be afraid to use up to one ounce of gel food coloring per cup of fondant. Add flavoring as well to brighten the taste of the fondant, but avoid adding too much, as that may overpower the flavor of the cake.
CHANGING THE COLOR OF BUTTER CREAM
If your buttercream has a natural yellow color, it can prove difficult to color properly. To lighten the yellow hues, add a small drop of purple food coloring in purple. You should test it out to get the right ratio first. You can then add a couple drops of your color of choice to achieve the perfect hues. Our precisely-formulated liquid food coloring will never thin or otherwise impact the excellent texture and taste of your buttercream frosting.
As you mix in the food coloring, use a light touch by gently folding the buttercream over and over with a soft spatula. The color should easily spread through the buttercream to achieve a solid tint. If the colors are not dark enough, let the buttercream sit to allow the colors time to grow deeper with time. For darker buttercream colors, consider starting with a rich chocolate base rather than vanilla.
ADDING BRIGHT HUES TO ICING Achieving and maintaining bright hues is not always easy with royal icing due to the rich colors tendency to fade with time when used in this medium. Start with a few drops at a time to slowly build up the color in your icing. Only use a butter knife or toothpick to mix the color in to avoid disturbing the texture of this dessert topping. Otherwise, you could negatively impact the light, flowing consistency of this versatile icing.
Make the finished tones darker than you need to allow for the colors to lighten up a bit while in storage. Keep your cake decorated with colored royal icing out of the sun or the colors may fade completely. To prevent the royal icing colors from bleeding, always apply icing to cakes at room temperature. With the right approach, you can master the process of coloring royal icing to create every design imaginable on your desserts.
