William Faulkner (September 25, 1897 - July 6, 1962), one of the influential writers in the history of American literature,Stream of consciousnessRepresentative of literature in the United States, 1949Nobel Prize for LiteratureThe reason for winning the award is "because he has made a strong and artistic contribution to contemporary American novels".

"

In his life, he wrote 19 novels and more than 120 short stories, of which 15 novels and most short stories took place in yorknapatafa county“Yorknapatafa lineage”。 Its main context is the story of generations of several families belonging to different social classes in Jefferson town and its suburbs, from 1800 to the Second World War. A total of more than 600 people with names and surnames appear alternately in various novels and short stories. The most representative works are《Noise and commotion》。

"
In the history of modern literature, the recognized representatives of stream of consciousness novels are Proust, Joyce and Woolf. The later representative of stream of consciousness novels is Faulkner of the United States. In terms of artistic expression, he undoubtedly has a more exploratory spirit and made bolder attempts. Compared with his predecessors, he has obviously made new expansion and creation. Since the mid-1980s, if he has been in the United States every year Faulkners number of monographs and papers published in China is only lower than that of Shakespeare among English writers. William Faulkner is a new symbol that the trend of modernist novel innovation has shifted to the American continent. Before that, novels had the advantage of innovation in spirit and form. However, since Faulkner appeared in the United States, the factors of modernist novel innovation in the 20th century began to change However, Faulkners literary value was first recognized by the French, and Americans did not recognize Faulkners great value at the beginning. Faulkner followed James Joyce and incorporated the history and human survival of the American South into his novels similar to contemporary myths, forming a new literary peak."
"
Garcia Marquez called Faulkner a mentor. His famous work withered branches and fallen leaves is recognized as a successful imitation of Faulkner. The story of one hundred years of solitude takes place in the fictional town of Macondo. It describes the rise and fall of the buntya family for seven generations over a hundred years. It is obviously influenced by the "yorknapatafa lineage" of Faulkners novels. He even imitated Faulkner to write in brothels. In 1981, Marquez published an article in the New York Times "The masters I admire are two very different European novelists. I didnt let go of their works as long as they were published, but I didnt regard them as complementary books, but two completely different forms of literary creation. One is William Faulkner and the other is Hemingway.""
"
Claude Simon, the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1985 and the representative writer of the French new novel school, juxtaposed Faulkner and Marcel Proust as two writers who influenced him. He imitated Faulkners stream of consciousness technique of reversing time and space and multi angle narration, and was regarded as Faulkners Apprentice."
"

"
After Faulkners death, the United States and other countries in the world spoke highly of him, and his research itself has become a knowledge. Countries continue to translate and introduce his works, and the creation of writers in some regions (especially Latin America) is obviously influenced by him. In addition to 19 novels, Faulkner also wrote nearly 100 short stories, some essays, speeches, letters, and After his death, Faulkner also published the original text of sadoris, the novel the flag in the tomb, and the original text of the temple, which constituted all his writing. Faulkner served as a resident writer at the University of Virginia from 1957 until his death in 1962."

"

Faulkner gives us an ancient but always modern theme. This may be a tragedy in the world: the blind man is also groping forward between his destiny and his responsibility.

"

—— French philosopher and writer, winner of the 1957 Nobel Prize for literature, Camus

"

"

Faulkners novel structure is very delicate and complex. He combines different narrators to make the content more compact. He is a writer who lets me take notes while reading novels.

"

——The winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in literature and the author of green house

"

"

After reading Faulkner, I felt like waking up from a dream. It turned out that the novel could talk nonsense like this, and the trivial things that happened in the countryside could also be written into a novel openly.

"

——Mo Yan, Chinese writer and winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature

"

"

Faulkners characters are like sitting on a Mercedes Benz facing back. The future is invisible, the present is very vague, and the past is very clear.

"

——French philosopher paul·Sartre

A towering, intense novel of family from the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature

With an introduction by Richard Hughes

Ever since the first furore was created on its publication in 1929, The Sound and the Fury has been considered one of the key novels of this century. Depicting the gradual disintegration of the Compson family through four fractured narratives, The Sound and the Fury explores intense, passionate family relationships where there is no love, only self-centredness. At its heart this is a novel about lovelessness - only an idiot has no grief; only a fool would forget it. What else is there in this world sharp enough to stick to your guts?

Born in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi, William Faulkner was the son of a family proud of their prominent role in the history of the south. He grew up in Oxford, Mississippi, and left high school at fifteen to work in his grandfathers bank. Rejected by the US military in 1915, he joined the Canadian flyers with the RAF, but was still in training when the war ended. Returning home, he studied at the University of Mississippi and visited Europe briefly in 1925.

His first poem was published in The New Republic in 1919. His first book of verse and early novels followed, but his major work began with the publication of The Sound and the Fury in 1929. As I Lay Dying(1930),Sanctuary (1931), Light in August (1932), Absalom, Absalom! (1936) and The Wild Palms (1939) are the key works of his great creative period leading up to Intruder in the Dust (1948). During the 1930s, he worked in Hollywood on film scripts, notably The Blue Lamp, co-written with Raymond ChandlerH. William Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949 and the Pulitzer Prize for The Reivers just before his death in July1962.
