Three of his six novels have been adapted into major films: liar, the color of money and the man who takes root. The fourth "Queens game" was adapted into a mini series of the same name and broadcast on Netflix in 2020. His books have been translated into at least 18 languages. Tevez was born in San Francisco, California in 1928 and grew up in the sunset area near the Pacific and Golden Gate Park. When he was ten years old, his parents put him in Stanford childrens sanatorium for a year, and then they returned to Kentucky, where Madison County gave the family a piece of land. At the age of 11, Tevez traveled across the country by train alone to reunite with his family. As World War II drew to a close, 17-year-old Tevez served in the Pacific theater as an assistant to a naval carpenter aboard the Hamilton. After discharge, he graduated from the model experiment school in 1945. He entered the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts (1949) and a master of Arts (1954) and studied with A.B. Guthrie, Jr., the author of big sky. When Tevez was a student, he worked in a swimming pool and published a story about the swimming pool, which was written for Guthries class. Later, he attended the Iowa Writers seminar, where he received a master of Arts in Creative Arts in 1960. After graduation, Tevez wrote for the Kentucky highway department. He teaches courses in science, English, sports and other fields at science hill, horseville, Owen and Carlisle small town middle schools in Kentucky. He has also taught at the University of North Kentucky, the University of Kentucky and South Connecticut State University. Tevez married Jamie Griggs in 1957. They lived together for 20 years before they divorced. They have two children, a son William and a daughter Julie From 1965 to 1978, Tevez taught English literature and creation at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and was appointed a university professor. As a member of the writers Association, he spent his last years in New York as a full-time writer.
