Review
"This book is a MUST read for every student in an Early Childhood or Elementary Education program or as a refresher course for teachers in grades PreK-3rd. This book is indeed a practical guide. It not only teaches phonics but provides lots of ideas for classroom implementation." —ReneeSuz

"This book has been so helpful as a refresher for me after years of teaching. It is also a handy reference when I need it. Most of my students have a strong background in phonics when they reach my 3rd grade class, but some do not and this book really helped me decide what interventions to use to help the students that need extra phonics instruction." --Ruthie

The sun beat down on me hotter than I had ever felt. I could feel the steam sizzling up from the tarmac as I stepped off the plane. Here I was in Guayaquil. Ecuador. My charge was to teach a class
of second graders—many of whom had limited English abilities—to read. It was my first year teaching, and I had journeyed far from Coal City, West Virginia, where I had first learned about the mysteries of books. As I walked toward the airline terminal, the enormity of the challenge and responsibility I had accepted struck me. I suddenly felt even hotter!
Each year millions of teachers enter classrooms across our nation (and the world) with this same challenge. They have to make key decisions as they wrestle with the questions of how best to teach children to read. All children deserve the promise that books hold. Whether they transport us to another world, make us laugh or cry, teach us something new, or introduce us to people we wouldn’t otherwise meet, we are thankful for their gifts. In turn, all children deserve the gift of reading. And as educators, we bear the responsibility and honor of delivering that gift.
This book is designed to help you better understand our unique and sometimes complex language and how we can use that knowledge to better teach children to read. Its focus is on phonics— the relationship between sounds and their spellings—and how helping children understand this important piece of the reading puzzle” can help develop fluent readers who have a passion for books and who understand how books can provide pleasure and information.
The first edition of this book was published more than 20 years ago. Since then I have continued my study and exploration of phonics, how best it’s taught, and the common obstacles that stand in the way of teachers delivering the most effective instruction to maximize student learning—especially when they have the basics in place. I have conducted research on topics such as using decodable text and developing fluency, and written numerous phonics instructional programs. I have observed countless teachers offering instruction of the sound-spelling system of our Language, worked with district administrators to select and monitor instructional delivery, and analyzed almost every curricular materials produced in the last two decades. I’ve also delved into advances made through current reading studies, including promising brain research.
This edition is a reflection of that new learning, and it is my goal that it will help you fine-tune your phonics instruction for increased student achievement. Learning how to sound out words is essential for early learners in not only developing early reading skills but also increasing their motivation to read. It is my hope that this resource will provide some of the tools you need in your classrooms. Enjoy!
